We’re Carmin and Louise. Two South African friends who were raised on peri-peri chicken on the braai. We live in Berlin now. And we miss home and all its flavours.
We thought Berlin deserved better hot sauce than what we could find. So why not just make it ourselves?! We're the sauce equivalent of that friend who makes everything more fun. Reliable when you need us, surprising when you don't expect it, and always down for whatever you're making.

Three versions: Classic for the purists, Smokey for the depth seekers, Pineapple for the chaos agents.

The history of peri-peri sauce is a story of colonialism, agriculture, cultural adaptation, global history, trade links, and the enduring joy of spicy food.
Centuries after chiles (originally from Peru) were spread across southern Africa as a result of the slave trade from the Americas, the African Birdseye chilli emerged.

Variations of the sauce have been around since the 15th century when the Portuguese, who colonised much of southern Africa, came across the chilli and made a marinade with garlic, red wine vinegar, paprika and other European imports. As a result, much of southern Africa make a local version. And Girlfriend Sauce is ours. As close to home as possible.

Best eaten directly from the bottle, but if you must: it also goes roast chicken or prawns, halloumi, eggs, grilled cheese toasties, fish, meat, spinach, roasted sweet potatoes, uhm... the list goes on. It can be used either as a marinade or pour-over sauce (or both).
